Of course we only know them as Aztecs but their actual identity was known as the Culhua-Mexica and they occupied central America from the early 1400s right up until the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century. If Thebes was considered the beating heart of Egypt in the middle ages, then Tenochtitlan is the linchpin of ancient Mexico. Interestingly, a more obscure reference between these two ancient civilisations lies in the preserved remains of Aztec cigars found in the tombs of the Pharaohs. At the height of the Aztec empire, the city of Tenochtitlan was populated by a staggering 140,000 inhabitants, axiomatically making it one of the most impressive civilisations of antediluvian history.
