Tony Awards – Extra! Extra! Read all about it! The intimate heart-tugger ‘Of a Musical Once’ was the big winner at the 2012 Tony Awards. It beat out the flashy, all singing, all dancing exuberant Newsies (based on the cult flop of a film musical). With Disney money behind it, Newsies had been the favorite to win, but the warm, simple and emotional story of an Irish musician falling slowly in love with an Eastern European waif stole everyone’s hearts. The other big upset was in the Best Actor in a Play category. You should have seen the face of Philip Seymour Hoffman when the Best Actor Tony went to James Corden of One Man, Two Guvnors. I think he was even rising from his seat in anticipation!
The Best Play went to socially conscious Pulitzer Prize winner, Clybourne Park, a comedy/drama about the gentrification of a fictitious black neighbourhood in Chicago. However it was Peter and the Star Catcher, another small production that garnered the most Tonys in the straight play categories. So forgive me if I crow a bit today since two of the biggest hits of the season (Once and Peter) originated at the Off Broadway, New York Theatre Workshop, of which I am Vice President of the board. – Cock a Doodle doo!
