Flanders Fields and WWI Battlefields: Everyone is moved by a visit to Flanders Fields. In 1914 and for four long years West Flanders was the scene of the First World War where European and wider international interests were fought over. A million soldiers were wounded, missing or killed in action and entire cities and villages were destroyed. Belgian Coast: The province of West Flanders meets the North Sea in a 70 km long stretch of coast whose beaches of soft white sand are rimmed by cheerful resorts.
