The Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean in Southern Asia, consisting of 1,192 coral islands, of which 200 are inhabitant and 80 are tourist resorts. It is one of the world’s most geographically dispersed sovereign states and the smallest Asian country by population and land area. Its capital and most populated city is Malé. The Maldives is the world’s lowest country, with even its highest point being the lowest point in the world. It is a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), and a member of the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non Aligned Movement.
