Located on the border with Belgium, Lille is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region. The city has a strong industrial history, but today it is known for its beautiful city centre, its large student population, and its cultural activities. Due to its location on the border, its metropolitan area lies in France as well as Belgium, which makes it one of the major metropolitan areas of Europe.
Being the perfect stop for a one-day trip, Lille is worth a visit for its Vielle Bourse, its Place du Général-de-Gaulle, its Place Rihour, its Porte de Paris, its Opera, its Chamber of Commerce, its old quarter, its Citadel, and its many museums, such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the Museum of Natural History, the Musée de l’Hospice Comtesse, or the Lille Art Modern Museum.
The name Lille comes from l’île (the island), just like its Dutch equivalent Rijsel, which comes from ter ijsel (at the island).
In 2020, Lille will be the first French city to become the World Design Capital, where design agencies and other creative companies will open their doors to the public with festivities and exhibitions during the whole year.
