Stockholm, Sweden's capital city, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Stockholm is widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, built where lake Mälaren meets the Baltic sea, on fourteen islands, with eight centuries of history and culture to choose from. Food, design, fashion, technology, film and music are the main attractions. Stockholm offers a wide range of galleries and museums and holds centre stage each year when the Nobel Prize is awarded on December 10. Stockholm is the first-ever winner of the European Green Capital award and has adopted a unique approach to sustainability where every aspect of environmental, economic and social impact is part of the equation.
Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city. There are around 75 direct routes from around 55 European destinations, and the airport is only 20 minutes from the city centre. Gothenburg has a lot to offer, but still has the charm of a smaller city. It is walking and biking friendly. Delegates participating in meetings rates Gothenburg 6,4 out of 7 (Satisfaction Index Gothenburg 2016). The city is among the world leaders in sustainable construction, waste management and re-usable energy, and at the cutting edge of environmental certification of hotels and events. In the city centre, there are almost 10,000 rooms to choose from whereof 86 percent, are environmentally certified. The Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre and Gothia Towers with its 1,200 rooms are an impressive display of efficiency and comfort.
Swedish Lapland
Swedish Lapland with its enormous areas of wilderness is the perfect incentive destination. A visit to the world renown Icehotel, opportunity to see the Aurora Borealis, Dinner on ice, snowmobile- and husky tours and visit the indigenous Sami people are all activities for the winter. In great contrast to the winter season, during the summer Lapland offers the opportunity to experience the Midnight sun – this is the time of the year when the sun never sets!
The Island of Gotland
Gotland is Sweden's largest island and is a popular holiday spot for both Swedes and foreigners. Its unusual nature, characterised by sea stacks (vertical rock formations shaped by the sea), as well as its long beaches and the medieval town of Visby, help Gotland attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Gotland is often called the Pearl of the Baltic.
The Hanseatic town of Visby ”... an extremely distinguished example of a Northern European walled Hanseatic town which has in a unique way preserved its townscape and its highly valuable architecture, the form and function of which clearly express the importance of this human settlement.” This was the explanation of UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee for inscribing the Hanseatic town of Visby on the prestigious World Heritage List in 1995. Few places give such an intense experience of both medieval metropolis and idyllic turn-of-the-century small town as Visby. Within the well-preserved wall, medieval church ruins and storehouses stand side by side with stone and wooden houses from later eras.
